About Voice of China and Asia Missionary Society

A Short History With a motto based on Jesus’ words in John 9:4 to “Work for the Night is Coming,” The Voice of China and Asia Missionary Society, Inc. is a US based 501(c)(3) non-profit missions ministry operating in Cambodia, Hong Kong, South Korea, and Taiwan. Our BeginningOur story begins with a deep love for the Chinese people. Driven by a desire to touch them for Christ, young Albert and Edna Reiton sailed from the United States to Hong Kong in 1909 as “faith missionaries.” Their ministry focused on the poor, the outcasts and the refugees, an enduring standard that still guides us today. Establishing churches, a Bible School and orphanages, their work laid the foundation of what would later become known as the Voice of China and Asia (VOCA). This work was thrust into the limelight at the beginning of WWII when Hong Kong was bombed on the same day as Pearl Harbor, HI. After weeks of hiding, all of our missionary staff were interred in a Japanese prison camp. Their story is told in the missionary classic, BONDSERVANTS—The Story of the Voice of China and Asia, available through our office upon request.Upon their repatriation to the United States, the Voice of China and Asia radio broadcast was begun and aired continuously until 1992. Radio partners assisted in post-war efforts that expanded throughout Asia and planted works that continue to this day. The work has grown through a second generation of indigenous missionaries and pastors whose works include: church planting, orphanages, Bible distribution, pastoral training, Christian Education (K-12 Schools and a Seminary). The Second Hundred Years – Entering New Ministry In 2008, noting a limited number of Chinese Bibles were being legally printed each year, our focus turned to her 600 million rural poor who were unable to obtain them. It is our goal to provide them our one millionth Bible by 2030. This ministry also entails Pastor’s Study Bibles for rural preacher and a unique program providing rural circuit-walking preachers with motorcycles. Other projects at the forefront of our ministry include regular support of the Peniel Seminary in Busan, Korea. To date it has produced over 1,800 graduates working in over 60 denominations, including our 180 Korean churches. Forty-six of these graduates now serve us as foreign missionaries. Looking Ahead Most recently VOCA has entered Cambodia, where we sponsor two elementary schools and are building a new Jr. & Sr. “International-level” High School complex. These schools are anchored by four churches and our nearby Happy Home for abandoned and distressed children. Throughout our history, VOCA has been sustained through the prayers and generosity of individuals, many representing the second- and third-generation supporters in their families. Due to the sensitivity of our work, we communicate through monthly mailed newsletters and limited online information. We welcome you to join in this worthy and enduring cause, bringing Christ where His Name and saving power are unknown.
